When I went vegan, almost two years ago now, I noticed some changes. Some happened almost instantly; others came with time. Veganism is far more than just a diet, and my aim was to help animals, but the health benefits are a nice bonus.
The changes listed happened as a result of eating a mostly whole-foods plant-based diet – one that emphasises wholegrains, fruit, veg and legumes, whilst limiting processed foods, oil, refined sugar and salt. See this infographic for some tips on plant-based eating. If you live on Oreos and vegan cheese, chances are you won’t notice many improvements, though of course those things are fine in moderation! Also, these changes are specific to me and everyone will be different.
I was blessed with quite clear skin in my teens, but it was dry with patches of mild eczema. I also tended to get the occasional spot around that time of the month. My skin is now much smoother, and I very rarely get spots.
Fewer Allergy/Asthma Symptoms
I’d been taking a preventive inhaler for asthma since I was a toddler, but have now come off it altogether. I also used to take antihistamines and eye drops daily for my allergies (hay fever, dust mites, pet fur, mould) but have stopped taking the eye drops and only occasionally need an antihistamine.
I had IBS-type symptoms in my teens, and often experienced nausea and stomach pain. Those have gone (aside from a very occasional flare up) and everything works much more smoothly.
Getting Ill Less Often
My immune system is far stronger than it used to be. In the past year, I haven’t had anything more serious than a runny nose and a slight sore throat. Even when hanging around people who have a bad cold, I rarely pick it up. I don’t miss waking up congested and having a throat like sandpaper.
Normal Period Cycle
My periods used to be too light, and they came every three weeks instead of once a month. It was such a pain having them so often. But a month after I went vegan, my period came at the right time for the first time in a couple of years, and the flow was more normal too. This has continued ever since.
I used to be quite a couch potato, but now I have more energy than I know what to do with! I had to start exercising to burn it all off, and am probably now in the best shape of my life.
Have you experienced any benefits after changing your diet? What were they? I’d love to hear from you!
